AGRA-SSTP, ILRI-N2Africa and MBI Scaling Chickpea Technologies Project Launch and Planning Workshop
15 April, 2015
ILRI Campus, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Introduction to the Workshop

The USAID’s and Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa’s (AGRA) Scaling Seeds and Technologies Partnership (SSTP) in Africa intended to accelerate smallholder farmers’ access to transformative agricultural technologies. It is working in six African countries including Ethiopia that have joined the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition to strengthen the seed sectors and promote the commercialization, distribution and adoption of quality seeds of superior varieties and complementary technologies including blended fertilizers and rhizobium inoculation.

ILRI’s N2Africa project, which is a large scale, science-based “research-in-development” project is focused on putting nitrogen fixation to work for smallholder farmers growing legume crops in Africa, with a vision of success of building sustainable, long-term partnerships with public, private and other legume value chain projects. One such partnership is with Menagesha Biotech Industry Plc. (MBI) for producing and supplying bio-fertilizers, Balegreen and Tsehay Union for multiplication and supply of improved chickpea seeds and the public research and extensions organizations for the implementation of an AGRA-SSTP supported “Scaling Chickpea Technologies for Increased Production and Productivity of Smallholder Farmers in Major Chickpea Producing Areas of Ethiopia” project.
